DC Green Festival: Mindless Spending Is Not Sustainable

I hit the Green Festival in DC this weekend. It was super crowded but a ton of fun. Partially because it inspired me, and partially because I felt like the room was filled with people who believe in the same mission as I do.

The first row I went down happened to be the one with lots of Fair Trade bags/wallets/notepads, organic T-shirts with cool designs, and jewelry. Which meant I was ga-ga and practically reaching for my wallet. I opted to wait until I'd hit every row before making any purchases, thankfully. About halfway through, it occurred to me that spending money on stuff I don't need is NOT sustainable living. Phew.

I wound up leaving with the two things I had come for (reuseable bags and biodegradable doggy poo bags) plus a few Christmas presents, three peace-themed bumper stickers, free samples of organic food + coupons, three new canvas shopping bags for the bargain price of my email address, and a subscription to Mother Earth News that my friend and I are going to share. Not bad considering all the things I wanted to buy.

Saved a little green while going green. I can deal with that.
